Bad news for Ghana as star winger ruled out of crucial AFCON qualifier

Ghana's hopes of qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations have been dealt a blow as winger Joseph Painstil has been ruled out of the upcoming match against Central African Republic.

The 25-year-old, who plays for Belgian club KRC Genk, suffered a knock in the last period of his league game against Anderlecht on Sunday and was later substituted.

According to the current web page context, Painstil has been granted permission by the Black Stars technical team to return to his club immediately to commence rehabilitation. He will miss the crucial match on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, where Ghana need a draw or a win to secure their place in the continental tournament.

Painstil's absence is a big loss for Ghana, as he is one of the most exciting and versatile players in the squad. He can play on either flank or behind the striker, and has a knack for scoring and creating goals. He has scored three goals and provided four assists in 11 appearances for Genk this season, and has also impressed in his four caps for Ghana.

Black Stars coach Chris Hughton will have to find a replacement for Painstil from his 24-man squad, which includes some new faces and experienced players. He has options such as Osman Bukari, Ernest Nuamah, Antoine Semenyo, and Inaki Williams, who can all play on the wing. However, none of them have the same chemistry and understanding with captain Andre Ayew and striker Jordan Ayew as Painstil does.

Hughton will face the media on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, at 4:30pm to reveal his tactics and squad selection for the match against C.A.R. He is expected to address Painstil's injury and how it affects his plans. He will also have to rally the support of the fans and the media, who are eagerly awaiting Ghana's qualification for AFCON after missing out on the last edition in 2021.
